Hidden Stories of 9/11: Honor in the Shadows

Written/Narrated by:  Ed Bejarana | Published on: September 9, 2025

Every year on September 11th, we gather to remember. We remember the towers. The planes. The unimaginable loss. But beyond what most of us saw on the news or heard in the years that followed, there are stories that still sit quietly in the shadows—stories of buildings, dogs, and DNA that remind us how deep the tragedy ran and how enduring the effort to heal has been.

As veterans and first responders, many of us see the world through a slightly different lens. We know that truth is often layered, that courage can come from unlikely places, and that some missions take decades to complete.

Here are three lesser-known truths from 9/11 worth remembering—and honoring.

A Skyscraper Few Talk About: WTC 7

We all remember the Twin Towers falling, but fewer people recall that a third skyscraper—World Trade Center 7—also collapsed later that day at 5:20 PM.

What makes this so unique is that WTC 7 was not hit by an airplane. Instead, it collapsed after burning for hours—its structure weakened by debris from the North Tower. It was 47 stories tall and housed offices for the CIA, IRS, and Secret Service. The way it fell—suddenly and vertically—sparked a wave of conspiracy theories that still circulate today.

Regardless of the theories, WTC 7 is a sobering reminder: the ripple effects of that day were vast, reaching far beyond what many Americans witnessed in real time.

Canine Courage: The Working Dogs of Ground Zero

In the chaos and rubble, help came from more than just humans. Over 300 search-and-rescue dogs were deployed to Ground Zero, working tirelessly alongside their handlers to find survivors and bring closure to grieving families.

But the emotional toll hit them too.

Many dogs became visibly depressed when they couldn’t find any living people. To lift their spirits, rescue workers began hiding themselves in the rubble, allowing the dogs to experience the thrill of a “successful find”—even if it was staged. It was a small kindness to creatures who gave everything they had.

For anyone who’s served with a military or police K-9, this story hits deep. These dogs weren’t just heroes—they were brothers and sisters in service.

Still Identifying the Fallen: A Mission That’s Not Over

Here’s a fact most Americans don’t realize: more than 1,100 victims of 9/11 still haven’t been identified. That’s 40% of those lost—and work continues even now to give names to those who remain unknown.

The forensic mission has stretched over two decades, involving some of the most advanced DNA technologies in existence. Tiny fragments of bone and tissue, preserved since 2001, are still being tested and matched to family members who’ve waited years—some for closure, others for peace.

It’s a stark reminder of the long-term nature of real recovery, and the importance of never giving up, even when the world moves on.

Why This Matters to Us

At The Veterans Club, we reflect on these stories not to dwell in tragedy—but to remember the full scope of what service, loss, and resilience really look like.

Whether it’s a silent skyscraper, a loyal search dog, or a scientist in a lab two decades later, every story plays a part in helping our nation heal.

As veterans and first responders, we share a bond with those who ran toward the flames and stayed long after the cameras turned away. Today, we honor them—and we carry forward their memory in every handshake, every meeting, every mission we undertake.

We remember. We rebuild. We serve.
