Perfect Weather, Great Friends, and a Whole Lot of BBQ

The Veterans Club’s 2nd Annual BBQ Brings 72 Members Together for a Day to Remember

On Saturday, July 25, The Veterans Club gathered at the beautiful Post Falls home of Dan and Nancy Blanchard for our 2nd Annual BBQ, and by every measure, the day was simply perfect.

A total of 72 veterans, first responders, family members, and friends attended—along with Tucker, Ed Bejarana’s faithful service dog, who once again proved to be one of the most popular guests of the afternoon.

The weather could not have been better. North Idaho gave us a warm summer day without the scorching heat, allowing everyone to relax under the shade, visit with old friends, and meet new ones. Throughout the afternoon, conversations flowed effortlessly. Everywhere you looked, people were laughing, sharing stories, reconnecting, and welcoming newcomers into the family that has become The Veterans Club.

Of course, no one went home hungry.

Karen and her incredible team outdid themselves with a meal that could have fed an entire branch of the military—and then some. There was enough food to feed the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Space Force, Police, Fire, and EMS personnel across North Idaho. From smoked brisket and barbecue chicken to hot dogs, chili, salads, sides, desserts, and more, every table reflected the generosity of the volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make the event a success.

One of the most meaningful moments of the afternoon came during the opening ceremony.

The Veterans Club honored the memory of Ray Bassler, whose love of music and friendship continue to leave an imprint on our organization. A place at the table was reserved in Ray’s honor, reminding everyone that while he may no longer be with us physically, he remains part of our family.

The tribute became even more special as Tim, Carol, and George performed the National Anthem using Ray’s own guitar—a treasured instrument graciously bequeathed to The Veterans Club by his widow, Kale Bassler, who was in attendance for the celebration. It was a moving reminder that the people who shape our lives continue to inspire us long after they are gone.

The afternoon continued with outstanding live music from The A-Train, led by Ed Bejarana. Their performance provided the perfect soundtrack to a day filled with fellowship, smiles, and conversation. It wasn’t a formal concert—it was friends making music for friends, exactly the way community should feel.

While great food and live music certainly made the day memorable, they weren’t the real reason everyone gathered.

The true purpose of The Veterans Club has always been creating opportunities for meaningful connection. Every conversation shared over lunch, every introduction made, every laugh exchanged, and every new friendship formed represents another step toward ending the isolation that too many veterans and first responders experience.

Events like our Annual BBQ remind us that suicide prevention doesn’t always begin with a crisis intervention. Often, it begins with something much simpler—a handshake, a shared meal, a familiar face, or a conversation that lets someone know they belong.

The Veterans Club extends our heartfelt thanks to Dan and Nancy Blanchard for once again opening their home to our members. Their generosity created the perfect setting for an unforgettable afternoon.

We also offer our sincere appreciation to Karen and her volunteer team, everyone who helped prepare food, set up tables, serve guests, clean up afterward, perform music, and make every attendee feel welcome.

Together, you didn’t just host a barbecue.

You strengthened a community.

And if the smiles on everyone’s faces were any indication, we can’t wait to do it again next year.
