The Power of Time Together: Why Connection Saves Lives
Written/Narrated by: Ed Bejarana | Published on: May 27, 2025
“The life you save might one day be your own.”
That’s not just a clever line—it’s the heart of what we do at The Veterans Club.
When we talk about suicide prevention, especially among veterans and first responders, most people think of crisis hotlines, therapy sessions, or medication. And while all those tools can be important, they often miss something much more foundational—connection.
The truth is simple but profound: people who feel loved and needed don’t take their own lives. Yet for many men, especially those who’ve worn a uniform, expressing that need for love and belonging is uncomfortable. Years of conditioning have taught us to keep our emotions guarded. We’re trained to be strong, stoic, and dependable—never vulnerable.
But here’s the thing… anyone who has served in combat knows what real love looks like. It may not be spoken aloud, but it’s there—in the shared hardships, the unwavering loyalty, the willingness to die for each other. That kind of bond doesn’t come from words—it comes from time spent side by side, facing life together.
We’ve all heard the stories of men who signed up for second or third tours because they couldn’t imagine letting their brothers and sisters go into danger without them. That isn’t about adrenaline or patriotism alone. That’s love—pure and simple.
In civilian life, we don’t often find ourselves in foxholes or patrol convoys, but the need for connection hasn’t changed. The battles may be different, but the wounds—loneliness, isolation, hopelessness—can still kill.
That’s why The Veterans Club exists.
We build community not with therapy sessions, but with coffee meetings, dinners, range days, tours, and conversations that start with a handshake and grow into friendship. It’s about showing up—consistently—and making space for each other. We don’t fix people. We walk with them. We listen. We laugh. We sit in the silence together if that’s what’s needed.
Love doesn’t have to be flowery. It doesn’t have to be declared. Sometimes it looks like showing up for a buddy’s kid’s baseball game, helping a friend fix a fence, or just grabbing tacos after a long week. It’s time shared, burdens carried, and the unspoken message: You matter. I’ve got your six.
In a world that seems more disconnected by the day, we’re fighting to rebuild something sacred. And it starts with one simple act: spending time together.
Join us. Invite someone. Call a friend. Come to a meeting. You never know whose life you might touch—or who might be there just in time to touch yours.
