WHAT?  GMRS Radio Class
WHERE?  VFW Post 889 406 N 4th St. CDA
WHEN?    Tuesday, Dec 3rd, 9:00 AM

The subject will be Emergency Comms using the FRS/GMRSMURS channels. I have a 22 page handout that I’ve recreated from the BAOFENG AR5RM User’s Manual. I’ve rewritten the parts in the manual that are specific to our needs to communicate on the above mentioned channels. It is simplified and language is written in layman’s terms so it is easier to understand. I’ve taken the mystery out of the User’s Manual so it will be easy to follow along with the class using the new handout.

It is all based on the BAOFENG AR5RM radio. I’ve included an Amazon link below so you can get the radio if you don’t have one. There is also a link below for a GMRS antenna. Also if anyone has a radio that isn’t programmed yet, I can program it for you at the end of the class. Most of the people in the class will already have their radios programmed with the VFW’s Channel Chart. If you’re one of the few that doesn’t have your radio programmed yet, I’ll take care of it for you. I’m planning on covering everything in 1-1/2 to 2 hours so we should get out of the class before noon.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Here’s a link for a 2 pack AR5RM radio

Here’s a link for an ABBREE 771 GMRS antenna. Actually 2 links. You can pick between a black one or an orange one. They’re both the same antenna. If you get a 2 pack radio you can get one color of each or whatever suits your fancy. You will need a dedicated GMRS antenna because the antenna that comes with the radio won’t transmit on the GMRS frequencies. They’re only $8 bucks each. There is another brand called NAGOYA that is “supposed” to be better but it isn’t IMO. I’ve field tested both antennas side by side and the ABBREE was the better of the 2 antennas and a lot cheaper too. $8 bucks vs $22 bucks for the Nagoya. More expensive isn’t always higher quality.
