Good Books.
Great Conversation.
Shared Experiences.

The Veterans Book Club brings veterans, first responders, and their family members together through a shared love of reading and conversation.

Once each month, members gather to discuss a selected book, share their thoughts, and enjoy the different perspectives that come from reading the same story. Whenever possible, we will also invite local and regional authors to join us, talk about their work, answer questions, and give members a chance to meet the person behind the book.

You don't need to be a literary expert. You don't need to prepare a book report. And there isn't going to be a test.

Read the book. Come to the discussion. Join the conversation.

The Veterans Book Club is another way The Veterans Club creates Connection, Purpose, and Belonging through experiences people can enjoy together.

About the Book

Jeff Potter is a Global War on Terror (GWOT) veteran whose body carries the scars of wars most people have forgotten. When a major global conflict begins and conscription returns (for both young men and women), he refuses to let his son and daughter be drafted into another avoidable foreign war. The Potter family intends to sit it out, but the federal government will not allow an individual to simply say “no.” As the Feds close in, the County Sheriff and the local community take a stand.

The book asks how far a parent is willing to go to protect their children from a war they don’t believe in—jail, death, or killing. It is framed as a story of faith, fatherhood, and resistance, inspired by real historical events from roughly a century earlier, but set in a near-future scenario.

About the Author

Charles Sage is a North Idaho author and member of The Veterans Club. His background includes time as a Baltimore County deputy, service as an Alaska State Trooper (where he flew a Super Cub in remote areas), and roughly 16 years as a pilot doing overseas intelligence/surveillance work supporting U.S. military operations. He wrote Potters’ Run during a period after a government mandate ended his defense contracting career. He lives on rural property in the inland Northwest and has appeared on the local North Idaho Experience podcast discussing the series.

About the Book

Tia Benson’s grandmother severed ties with her family long ago, leaving Tia with no knowledge of her great-grandparents, cousins, or origins. Curious and unwilling to leave the mystery unsolved, Tia starts a DNA search using a cheek swab from her mother. Three thousand miles away, Vivian Weiss is persuaded to submit her own DNA sample in the hope of learning what became of her wayward daughter, who left years earlier with a defiant gesture. As the results unfold, generations reconnect, old gaps are bridged, and “out of many sorrows, joy, family, and love are born.”

It is categorized under historical/genre fiction and centers on family history, DNA discoveries, reconnection, and the emergence of joy from past ruptures. It does not appear to be part of a larger series.

Meet Our Guest Authors

One of the things we hope will make The Veterans Book Club special is the opportunity to meet authors personally.

Whenever possible, we will feature writers from North Idaho and the surrounding region, giving members an opportunity to hear the stories behind the stories. Guest authors may discuss their book, share how it came to be written, answer questions, and participate in our regular Book Club conversation.

Author appearances will be announced on this page and added to the Book Club calendar.
