Keeping Connection Simple: An Update on Monthly Dinners and RSVP Events

The Veterans Club exists so veterans and first responders can keep building real relationships after service ends. Our weekly Patriot Pour gatherings remain the heart of that work—steady, low-pressure, and focused on people simply showing up for one another.

As many of you know, we have temporarily paused the monthly Patriot Dinner Gatherings and other events that require an RSVP or formal sign-up. The Western States Cat tour is the final non-ticketed event that will use a sign-up sheet. After that, we are stepping back from this model.

The reason is straightforward. The Veterans Club is run by volunteers. Coordinating food, seating, and facility needs based on last-minute changes takes significant time and creates real pressure on the people who step up to help. In August, for example, we received 23 RSVPs and 49 people arrived. That gap created challenges for the restaurant staff, generated complaints, and raised questions about whether we could continue using the space. We tried limiting attendance, but the pattern continued—far more people showed up than had RSVPed. A recent football game followed the same trend: five RSVPs when food decisions had to be made, and 16 people in attendance.

We still want opportunities for members to share meals and spend time together outside the weekly meetings. What we are changing is how we organize those gatherings so the logistics do not fall entirely on a small group of volunteers.

Going forward, events that include food will be held at restaurants without reserving a private space in advance. If you plan to attend, please email info@theveteransclub.org ahead of time. When the first members arrive, they will do their best to secure a table large enough for the group that has checked in. Late arrivals and anyone who has not emailed in advance will need to handle their own seating and ordering.

The Board is actively evaluating a new approach to monthly dinners and expects to share an update later this month.

Why Time Together Outside the Weekly Meeting Matters

Relationships often begin over coffee at Patriot Pour, but lifelong friendships are built when we enjoy life together—sharing a meal, attending an event, or simply spending unhurried time in each other’s company. The Veterans Club knows this formula well. That is why we continue looking for ways to create those moments, even as we adjust how we organize them.

We are working toward a day when the organization has paid staff who can absorb the load of last-minute planning and coordination. Until then, we must be creative about finding ways we can all participate in life together without placing an unsustainable burden on the volunteers who make these gatherings possible. The weekly meetings will always be our foundation. The friendships that grow beyond them are what turn a gathering into a lasting community.

If you have ideas or suggestions for how we can keep creating these opportunities, they are always welcome. And if you would like to get involved by volunteering to help run an event, please talk to any of the board members or email info@theveteransclub.org.
